The European Union Election Observation Mission has identified Festus Keyamo, a former Minister of State for Labour and Employment, and Femi Fani-Kayode, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as individuals responsible for spreading fake news during Nigeria’s 2023 general elections.

According to the EU’s recent report, Keyamo and Fani-Kayode were accused of disseminating false information that misled the Nigerian public throughout the election period.
Examples of Fake News Spread by Keyamo and Fani-Kayode
The EU Observers provided specific instances in their report where the APC leaders were found to have spread fake news while promoting their respective candidates.
The report highlighted that there was a notable increase in misleading information leading up to and during the election.

Many of these false reports were attributed to well-known personalities associated with political parties.
Festus Keyamo’s Promotion of False Information
On February 12, Festus Keyamo, representing the APC, promoted information from a suspicious website that accused Peter Obi of engaging in bribery.
The report states that this story quickly went viral but was debunked within a few hours.
Femi Fani-Kayode’s Allegations and Social Media Posts
Femi Fani-Kayode, a former minister of aviation and member of the APC, made a claim on February 11, 2023, alleging that the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Abubakar, had a secret meeting with serving military generals in Abuja.
He further accused Atiku of attempting to incite chaos, provoke a coup d’état, and establish a new and unconstitutional order.

Fani-Kayode’s claim was widely shared across multiple social media platforms, garnering a total of 281.2k impressions.
However, the report mentions that the following day, he posted that the Army had denied reports of any meeting between its officers and Atiku.
The EU’s report highlights the concerning spread of fake news during Nigeria’s 2023 general elections and specifically identifies Festus Keyamo and Femi Fani-Kayode as prominent individuals involved in disseminating false information.
Such actions have the potential to mislead the public and undermine the integrity of the electoral process.
