Nigeria Armed Forces Set to Promote Over 50 Mid-Level Officers to Fill Senior Vacancies

These officers are expected to fill the vacancies left by recently retired senior officers.

Officers from Regular Course 43 Considered for Promotion

The majority of the officers being considered for promotion hail from Regular Course 43 of the Nigerian Defence Academy.

However, the Military Council Board, responsible for approving promotions, has not yet convened.

Deadline for Voluntary Resignations Issued

The Military High Command issued a deadline of July 3 for senior military officers to submit voluntary resignation letters.

Major General Y. Yahaya, on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff, stated in a memo dated June 26 that this move aimed to uphold military hierarchy and service discipline.

Retirement Applications Submitted by Members of 38 Regular Course

As per a Defence Headquarters memo, officers senior to Regular Course 39 of the Nigerian Defence Academy were instructed to apply for voluntary retirement.

It has been reported that all members of the 38 Regular Course of the NDA complied with the directive and submitted their retirement applications by the given deadline.

Approval of Promotions Pending Review by Military Council Board

A senior military officer revealed that some members of the 39 Regular Course of the NDA submitted their retirement applications, excluding those recently redeployed by the new service chiefs.

The officer suggested that the approval for promotions would occur after the Military Council Board reviewed and approved the list of recommended candidates.

Officers from RC 40, 41, and 42 Filling Vacant Positions

According to an anonymous member of RC 43, officers from Regular Courses 40, 41, and 42 have already reached the ranks of major generals, rear admirals, and air vice marshals, respectively.

They are currently filling the vacant positions resulting from recent changes.

Promotion Process and Statements from Nigerian Navy Spokesperson

Commodore Adedotun Ayo-Vaughan, spokesperson for the Nigerian Navy, stated that the anticipated promotions include the elevation of the Chief of Defence Staff to the rank of four-star general (full general), the Chief of Army Staff to lieutenant general, Rear Admiral Ogalla to vice admiral, and Air Vice Marshal Abubakar to air marshal.

Ayo-Vaughan noted that promotions for middle cadre officers typically occur around this time, while senior officers are considered for 1-star and 2-star generals towards the end of the year.

Retention of Coursemates by Chief of Army Staff

Major General Taoreed Lagbaja, the new Chief of Army Staff, has retained some of his coursemates to work closely with him at the headquarters, aiming to address the security challenges facing the country.

One of the appointments made includes Major General Jimmy Akpor as the Chief of Administration at Army Headquarters.
