Mrs. Monilola Udoh, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, made the announcement.
Approval of the Name Change by Senate and House of Representatives
Mrs. Udoh revealed that the bill for the name change was approved by the Senate on March 29, 2023, followed by the House of Representatives on April 5, 2023.

The amendment to the National Centre for Women Development Act aims to enhance the center’s functions and services.
Assent by President Muhammadu Buhari and Call for Public Awareness
The government, under the previous administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, gave its approval to the bill by assenting to it in May 2023.
Mrs. Udoh urged partners, the general public, and the media to widely publicize the name change, ensuring its reach across Nigeria and beyond.
Commemorating Mrs. Babangida’s Contributions and Inspiring Women Leaders
The Director-General of the center, Asabe Vilita-Bashir, acknowledged the significant contributions of the late first lady, particularly through her “Better Life for Rural Women” project, which positively impacted women across the nation.
Vilita-Bashir expressed the belief that this renaming would serve as an inspiration for women in leadership positions, encouraging them to emulate Mrs. Babangida’s virtues and commitment to women’s welfare.

Significance of Renaming for Women and Preserving History
Moji Makanjuola, Chairperson of the Implementing Committee for Infrastructure and Renaming of the center, emphasized the importance of the renaming for women.
She highlighted the need to recognize history as a means to inform present actions and foster a sense of identity among the people.
Makanjuola expressed hope that the center would expand its reach and become a beacon of hope for Nigerian and black women worldwide.
Recognition of Impact and Call for Continued Support
Hajiya Aliyu, a beneficiary of the late Maryam Babangida’s “Better Life for Rural Women” program, lauded the renaming of the center as a fitting recognition of its positive impact on the lives of Nigerian women.
She urged future first ladies to surpass Mrs. Babangida’s achievements and emphasized the importance of allocating resources to support rural women at the state and local government levels.
