According to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education, over 600 schools have been destroyed by last week’s floods, according to the most recent reports. The cost of the damage is anticipated to be in excess of R400 million.

Mobile classrooms are being sent to the schools that have been impacted.

Classrooms are being repurposed as shelters for displaced persons in some areas.

“According to the most recent report, there are 660 schools, with the number of schools that are not accessible increasing from 17 to 102, with an estimated loss of R442 million in rands and cents.” We are in the midst of our conversations, and we have begun to consider curriculum coverage and how teaching and learning will take place, particularly in the 102 schools,” says the department.

Hundreds of schools damaged and 17 inaccessible after floods:

According to Mahlambi, temporary arrangements are being considered to accommodate students, with schools set to reopen on Tuesday.

“We’re considering a varied solution; one of the concerns is that it will be temporary to relocate them to other local schools.” We’re also looking into the consequences of this for learners’ psychological and social concerns. Having to go to a different setting as a learner at this moment in time, as well as how we will deploy educators and what will happen to educators who will be unable to access the schools,” Mahlambi says.
