Mmamoloko Kubayi, the Minister of Human Settlements, says money have already been provided to begin repairing homes destroyed by severe rains and floods in KwaZulu-Natal.

The death toll has risen to 395 people.

Meanwhile, officials in Durban claim that homes have been destroyed and roads have been washed away. There have been concerns that the province’s predicament will worsen as more rain is forecast.

Kubayi and other ministers are reviewing the damage caused by the severe floods in KZN.

In a press conference in Durban, Kubayi stated that no funds will be misappropriated.

“In terms of the National Housing Finance Corporation, we have already budgeted R150 million to be able to act, but we will also receive a contribution of R2 million from the corporation’s social investment responsibility, which will help with our community’s social needs.” In terms of project management, NHFC has the capacity to assist the province with the repair and rehabilitation of the province’s houses.”

According to Kubayi, her department will begin providing temporary housing for flood victims on Tuesday next week.

“We’ve begun rerouting the funds.” As we visited the communities, we discovered some mud buildings that had fallen, and we have made it a priority to remove the mud houses by Tuesday. The temporary housing units are beginning to arrive on site in order to provide relief to those living in the halls. The municipality will be required to provide us with land. We are performing temporal work, and when we uncover flaws, we will inform communities and South Africans as a whole.”
