The City of Cape Town said the complainant reported possible cable theft on a farm near Fisantekraal, Durbanville.

Law Enforcement officers attached to the Rural Safety Group responded and observed the area with thermal cameras.

The officers saw that the suspects operated in two groups going to and fro to a vehicle each.

“The officers assisted by the SAPS sector commander approached the suspects who upon seeing the officers fled from the scene,” said the City of Cape Town.

The suspects were chased down and five people were arrested – two vehicles and a pair of bolt cutters believed to have been used in the commission of the offence were seized.

The City recovered 19 rolls of 12Kv bare copper overhead electrical cable with an estimated length of 1.2 kilometres in one of the vehicles. The stretch of cable has an estimated value of R850 000.

The five suspects are expected to make a court appearance imminently.
