President Cyril Ramaphosa will on Friday appear before the South African Human Rights Commission’s investigative hearings into the July 2021 unrest.

Several Cabinet Ministers including Police Minister Bheki Cele, former State Security Minister Ayanda Dlodlo, Justice Minister Ronald Lamola and Trade and Industry Minister Ebrahim Patel have also gave evidence during the hearings earlier this year.

Over 300 people died and businesses were destroyed during days looting and violence that swept through Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal last year.

President Ramaphosa will testify with regard to his responsibility as the Head of State.

Analysts say the President should have paid more attention to the intelligence reports warning of the impending threats to parts of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
