Education district iv holds sports festival

Lagos State Education District IV has held its annual sports festival for students in the zones under the district to showcase their talents and skills in various sports at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere.

Speaking at the event, the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary, Education District IV, Mr. Sunday Agboade Jokotola, said the annual sports festival is one of the outdoor activities that can produce an all-around development of individuals, young learners and growing adults because it improves the psychomotor domain of education.

He explained that apart from the mental and academic importance, sports also helps in socialisation, patriotism and supports the students in developing as well as fine-tuning their psychomotor skills with dexterity, adding that the festival had earlier begun with a zonal elimination series within the district for selection of the best athletes among the competitors.

Jokotola, therefore, congratulated the winners and advised those that did not win to believe in themselves and be hopeful they can do better next year.

He also charged them not to rest on their oars but work hard to improve in the next tournament. Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary appreciated Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, for giving the students an opportunity to showcase their talents not only in the classroom but also on the field.

“All our teachers also deserve commendation for their efforts in mentoring and coaching the students while striving to bring out the best in them. I must extend my appreciation to the Principals as well for their mentorship and support to everyone concerned, which has led to the success of the students”, he submitted.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education, Mr. Abayomi Abolaji, expressed how delighted he was to be present at the event, appealing to the students not to relent in their efforts but to keep up with their training and improve their skills for future success.

Abolaji emphasised the need to discover new sports talents through the festival, saying it will contribute to sports development in the State as well as the country as a whole. The overall winner at the festival was Surulere Zone with a total of 26 Gold Medals; Apapa Zone came second with 16 Gold Medals; while Mainland Zone came third with 10 Gold Medals.
