Here’s what will happen if a no confidence motion succeeds

Cabinet will no longer be the one President Cyril Ramaphosa painstakingly chose. Instead, it would have to be dissolved a new one would need to be put in place. If the DA’s motion succeeds, a complete Cabinet restructuring will be implemented.

Ramaphosa, however, will be immune to the restructuring.

Opposition party releases assessment on ministers

Ahead of the no-confidence motion vote, the DA released an assessment of the ministers in place. The assessment revolves around how the ministers are doing in terms of their performance agreements with Ramaphosa.

As it stands, not many did very well. The DA-created hashtag #CabinetMustGo has been gaining momentum as netizens are using it to speak about the upcoming vote.

Can Ramaphosa reinstate the ministers that may be voted out?

According to Daily Maverick, there is nothing that would expressly hinder Ramaphosa from reconstituting Cabinet with the same ministers who could be ousted.

No confidence motion: How many votes are needed to OUST the Cabinet?

The DA will need a simple majority from all voters present in the house. If all 400 elected MPs cast a vote, that means a total of 201 votes would need to be cast IN FAVOUR of the no confidence motion for it to be successfully upheld.

This won’t be easy, mind. The DA, and all other opposition parties, hold just 170 seats in the National Assembly. Even if we assume everyone bar the ANC votes to oust the Cabinet, they’re going to need an additional 31 votes from the ANC benches. A mini-revolt is possible, but one requiring this many defectors is a tough ask.

The DA had held out hope that they could get ministers barred from voting, citing a conflict of interest. That would have whittled down the available ANC votes down from 230, to 204.
