Batten down the hatches: Wet weather set for much of New Zealand

At this stage, the highest rainfall accumulation are expected in Northland, where an orange heavy rain warning is in force.

Up to 100mm to 140mm is expected in Northland from 11am Sunday to 9am Monday, mainly in the north and east of the region.

Northlanders are warned the heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible, and driving conditions may be hazardous.

Northland is not the only region expected to be hit by the wet weather – although the rain levels are not expected to be as much.

MetService has issued a heavy rain watch for northern and eastern parts of Auckland, including Great Barrier Island, along with Coromandel Peninsula, western Bay of Plenty, northern Taranaki and northwest Tasman.

For Auckland, the heavy rain is expected from 6am on Monday, especially north of the Harbour Bridge, with thunderstorms and localised downpours possible. The situation is the same for Coromandel Peninsula from 10am Monday.

For Bay Of Plenty, west of Opotiki, the heavy rain is set to start at about 11am on Monday, although it will continue into Tuesday,

In Taranaki, the area north and about Mt Taranaki will get a dousing from 5am Monday.

In the South Island, Tasman – west of Motueka – will be impacted from 6am Monday with periods of heavy rain.

Meanwhile, Aucklanders are set for showers and strong winds on Sunday, according to MetService.

Strong northeasterly winds have been forecast, with gusts of up to 90km per hour in exposed locations in the afternoon.

Rain is expected in the northern part of the region, also in the afternoon.

Temperatures are expected to reach a high of 23C and a low of 17C, with the sun to set about 7.34pm.

The strong northeasterlies are set to continue on Monday, with possible heavy rain in the morning and a chance of thunder.

The weather will gradually improve as the week progresses, with temperatures of up to 25C, a few showers and breezes from the north and south before becoming fine on Friday.
