The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Free State has had to arrest one of their own, as well as a woman from Meloding, Virginia, for allegedly conspiring to falsely accuse a man of rape and then demanding money from him to have the case against him closed.
“A Meloding woman accused a male person of rape and reportedly worked along with a female police officer to demand R15 000 so that the rape case could be dropped,” stated SAPS Free State spokesperson Captain Stephen Thakeng. Both were arrested and will appear in Virginia Magistrate Court”
FREE STATE WOMAN DEMANDS R15K TO CLOSE RAPE CASE
According to SAPS Free State, the woman had wanted several thousands of rands from her boyfriend. He then apparently told her he couldn’t afford to give her the money and she in turn, threatened to break up with him. Police say the man is married and his wife lives in neighbouring Mozambique. The girlfriend had apparently complained that he spends too much money on his wife instead of her.
“On the 13 March 2022 a 29-year-old girlfriend arrived where her boyfriend was residing and wanted R4000 and that he spend his money to his spouse in Mozambique and she wanted to end the relationship because she was not given money. She left to an unknown destination. After she left the boyfriend got a call from Meloding Police Station that the girlfriend was registering a case of rape and his girlfriend phoned him that she was demanding R15 000 to cancel the rape case.”

When the provincial SAPS’ Anti-Corruption Unit was informed about the incident, they put together a trap, which resulted in the girlfriend and a 41-year-old Police Constable at the Meloding Police Station being handcuffed. In their possession, police found cash to the tune of about R5 000. They have both been charged with extortion and are set to appear before the Virginia Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 22 March 2022.
