Price hike! Golden Arrow bus fares to SOAR next week – here are the new costs

There really is no escaping the cost of living crisis at the moment: If you’re a motorist trying to fill your tank up, petrol prices are soaring – but alternative means of travel are also getting more expensive. Golden Arrow bus fares, for example, are set to spike at the beginning of next week.

Another ‘cost of living’ consequence

The controversial move was confirmed by the company via their Facebook page on Wednesday. In a written statement to accompany the new fees – which come into play from Monday 14 March – Golden Arrow argued they had little choice but to increase their bus fares, based on the current global unrest.

According to officials, the whopping price of diesel – which has almost doubled since mid-2020 – has also played a major factor in their decision. In total, customers will be asked to pay 8% more than the current fees.

“Considering the current global unrest, it is clear that the South African economy is going to continue to find itself in a very difficult position. The diesel price has increased by 81% in the last 18 months and current projections predict that fuel prices will continue to soar. This has knock-on effects across our supply chain.”

“It has therefore become necessary to implement an interim fares increase of 8% across the board as of 14 March 2022. We must also caution that further increases may become necessary as the year progresses.”

Golden Arrow bus fares also increased in December, but the service has been forced to take drastic action. South Africa’s spiralling fuel costs pose a significant risk to the working class, who risk being priced out of travel.

This handy schedule below shows how bus fares will be changing from next Monday. Though the rises may look nominal to some, the cents and rands all add up – particularly at a time like this.
