Rejection of seats for women is unfortunate- Deputy Whip

The Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Mrs.

Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, says the rejection of 111 seats for women at the National Assembly was a big blow for the future of women participation in governance.

Onyejeocha who is the sponsor of the Bill made the remark while briefing National Assembly Correspondent described Nigeria as the least in terms of women representation.

While describing the lawmakers action as unfortunate, the Deputy Chief Whip said Nigeria is losing a lot from development partners.

Onyejeocha who observed that “the rejection has taken the country fifty years backward said six:ty percent of those that always participated actively in election process are women.


A member from Borno State, Dr.

Zainab Gimba observed that the bills were misunderstood by majority of the lawmakers.

Dr.

Gimba stated that the bill would have assisted a lot “because women find it tough to contest for seats due to men’s dominance in the political scene.

” 
She however, expressed optimism that the rejection would make women in Nigeria to sit up.
