Today Is Ash Wednesday In Christendom

It’s a forty-day period of self-examination and fasting that marks the beginning of Lenten season of spiritual preparation before Easter

Speaking on the significance of the season, the Archdeacon, Adazi-Ani Archdeaconry and Vicar Saint Jude’s Church Adazi-Ani, Venerable Chris Nkem-Okafor said that on Ash Wednesday, they mark Christians the sign of Christ in their foreheads, reminding them that they are dust and unto dust, they shall return and they should live a holy and righteous life so as to join Christ on the last day.

Venerable Nkem-Okafor encouraged all Christians to fast and seek God’s face during the period through self-denial, spiritual discipline and repentance.

He noted that the purpose of the season is to set aside time for reflection on Jesus Christ to consider his suffering, sacrificial life, death and resurrection, noting that it is important that each and every one should journey with Christ and make him the pillar of their life.

For the Parish Priest of Saint Catherine’s Parish, Awkuzu, Reverend Father Innocent Acho-Egbunike, the imposition of ashes on the fore heads of the faithful is to identify them with Jesus Christ as well as Christ’s sacrificial death and called on Christians to use the period to renew their faith in God through sacrifices.

Correspondent Amaka Chibuzor Okoye reports that special services and mass will be celebrated in all the churches that will observe the season today.
