Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville agree Ruben Amorim is no longer the right manager for Manchester United in the Premier League

Manchester United’s struggles under Ruben Amorim have reached a breaking point, with pundits calling for the Portuguese boss to step aside.

Jamie Carragher didn’t hold back during his Monday Night Football analysis, describing Amorim’s time at the club as nothing short of “disastrous.”

Carragher argued that United’s hierarchy is keeping him in charge only because they don’t want to admit to yet another mistake.

For him, the writing is already on the wall, and the sooner both parties move on, the better.

Carragher’s Brutal Verdict

Carragher pointed out that Amorim’s system, so successful at Sporting Lisbon, never matched the traditions or style of Manchester United.

He warned that the longer the club clings to this experiment, the worse the damage will be.

“United and Amorim both need a clean break,” Carragher insisted.

“Nobody likes seeing managers lose jobs, but this is heading towards the inevitable.”

Duncan Ferguson Adds His Criticism

On Sky’s coverage of Everton’s clash with West Ham, former striker Duncan Ferguson also took aim at Amorim’s tactics.

Ferguson argued that United’s squad is stronger than it looks but lacks flexibility under the current manager.

“When you’re losing games, you need to adapt,” Ferguson said.

“He hasn’t tried to tweak things, and the results suggest he won’t.”

The Blame Doesn’t Stop at Amorim

Carragher made it clear that responsibility extends beyond the coach.

He highlighted that United’s sporting directors knew what kind of system Amorim would bring when they hired him.

“His entire identity is built around this formation,” Carragher explained, comparing it to Klopp’s pressing or Guardiola’s short passing.

“The club’s leadership should have known this was what they were signing up for.”

Tactical Missteps That Raise Eyebrows

One of the more baffling decisions under Amorim has been using Mason Mount as a left wing-back—something that left both Neville and Carragher shaking their heads.

Neville, speaking on his own podcast, said it’s decisions like that which cause players to lose belief in the manager.

“You can’t stick Mount at left wing-back,” Neville raged.

“It’s ridiculous, and it looks awful.”

A Team Built for Something Else

Carragher suggested that United’s recruitment hasn’t gone fully into Amorim’s system, which leaves room for a new manager to quickly reshape the team.

He pointed out that with talents like Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko, a more conventional setup could push the team back toward European qualification.

Sympathy, But No Excuses

Despite his sharp criticism, Carragher did show some sympathy for Amorim.

He praised the Portuguese coach’s early success at Sporting Lisbon but admitted that his time at United has been “beyond belief” in how poorly it has gone.

“It’s better for everyone if they just shake hands and move on,” Carragher said.

Neville’s Instincts Back the Claims

Gary Neville joined the debate, echoing Carragher’s concerns.

He believes that United’s players are visibly losing faith in Amorim’s methods.

For Neville, body language and morale are now clear indicators that confidence in the system is collapsing.

What Comes Next for United?

Manchester United have one last game before the international break, facing newly promoted Sunderland.

After that, a daunting trip to Anfield awaits.

Whether Amorim will still be in the dugout for those matches is now one of the biggest questions in English football.
