The season didn’t begin smoothly for Orlando Pirates.
After claiming the MTN8 title with a hard-fought win over Polokwane City, the Buccaneers stumbled with back-to-back league losses to Sekhukhune United and Marumo Gallants.
Those early setbacks could have derailed their campaign, but the team, under the guidance of coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, quickly turned things around.
Since that shaky start, the Pirates have embarked on an impressive run, securing eight consecutive victories across all competitions.
Their dominance was especially clear in the CAF Champions League, where they advanced to the last 32 with a commanding 7-0 aggregate win over Lioli.
Ouaddou Credits Trust and Teamwork
So, what’s behind this remarkable turnaround? According to Ouaddou, it isn’t just tactical brilliance—though that plays a role—but also trust and collaboration within the club’s hierarchy.
“I didn’t change anything. I just trusted the work I’m doing, the values I put into my job, the love I give my players,” Ouaddou explained.
“What’s also crucial is the trust of my club. Without the board’s support, it’s very difficult to succeed.”
The former Fulham defender emphasized the importance of building strong relationships, holding both team and individual discussions to clearly communicate his expectations on attacking play, defensive duties, transitions, and set-pieces.
Success is a Team Effort
Ouaddou was quick to highlight that he isn’t achieving these results alone.
“I have a fantastic support system, including skilled South African staff,” he said.
“Success at Orlando Pirates involves many departments, not just the coach.
My technical team and all involved deserve credit.”
This acknowledgment underscores the collective effort behind the Buccaneers’ current form and the culture of trust and accountability that Ouaddou has fostered.
Upcoming Fixtures: TS Galaxy and Siwelele FC
Looking ahead, Orlando Pirates face TS Galaxy in the Betway Premiership on Tuesday evening at Orlando Stadium, with kickoff at 19:30.
Shortly after, the Buccaneers will kick off their Carling Knockout campaign against Siwelele FC at the same venue.
Fans will be hoping that the team can continue their winning momentum and maintain the confidence that Ouaddou has worked hard to instill.
