Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman Defends Israel and Condemns Government Shutdown Threats Amid Progressive Backlash in Washington

In Washington, Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman is navigating a tense crossroads within his own party.

The freshman Democrat, who rode a wave of progressive enthusiasm to victory in the 2022 midterms, now finds himself at odds with the far-left wing of the Democratic Party over key policy issues.

From Progressive Favorite to Moderate Voice

Fetterman’s rise came with strong backing from progressive voters after defeating Dr. Mehmet Oz.

Yet in recent years, the senator has taken a more measured approach on certain votes, including confirming several of former President Donald Trump’s nominees such as Attorney General Pam Bondi.

This pragmatic streak has left some of his most ardent supporters frustrated.

No Plans to Jump Ship to the GOP

During an interview on Fox’s Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo, Fetterman addressed speculation about whether he might leave the Democratic Party.

He was clear: party-switching is off the table.

“If you want a Democrat who calls people Nazis or fascists, well, I’m not going to be that guy,” he said.

“I follow the truth wherever it leads, whether it aligns with Republican or Democratic views.”

Standing Firm on Israel and Government Stability

Fetterman emphasized two flashpoint issues that have put him at odds with progressives.

First, he reiterated his unwavering support for Israel amid the ongoing Gaza conflict, a stance that has drawn sharp criticism from Democrats such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar, who accuse the Jewish state of committing atrocities.

Second, he warned against leveraging government shutdowns for political gain.

“If you have a Cat 5 storm facing our nation, why would you even have that conversation right now?” Fetterman said.

The senator stressed the urgent need for Congress to pass funding for the 2026 fiscal year, which begins on October 1, or risk a shutdown after 11:59 p.m. Tuesday.

Fetterman’s Israel Trip Underlines Commitment

The senator’s commitment to Israel is longstanding.

In February, he visited the country in his signature sweatshirt and basketball shorts to meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

On Fox News, Fetterman underscored his position, saying he would continue siding with Israel over Hamas as the conflict escalates.

“This war has to end, and that’s why Netanyahu’s been forced to go into Gaza City,” Fetterman noted.

“I’m following Israel just as I have for nearly two years.”

Rising Tensions With Party Progressives

Fetterman’s divergence from the party’s progressive base has created political friction.

His approach to potential government shutdown votes has even sparked criticism from 2022 primary rival Conor Lamb, who took to X to call Fetterman “unbelievably lazy” for considering aligning with Republicans to avert a shutdown.

As Fetterman navigates these divisions, the senator appears determined to chart his own course, even if it means challenging some of his party’s most vocal supporters.
