Residents and visitors in KwaZulu-Natal are being warned to prepare for a turbulent start to the week, as forecasters predict widespread thunderstorms, heavy rains, and persistent strong winds along the province’s coastline.
Weather experts say the region will continue to experience some of the country’s most unsettled conditions.
“We still have very unsettled weather gripping KwaZulu-Natal, with widespread thunderstorms ongoing,” said Joel Guy, a local forecaster.
The storm activity is expected to persist through Sunday night and into Monday, raising concerns about flash floods in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
Strong Coastal Winds Threaten the South Coast
The South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal faces particularly hazardous conditions, with fresh to strong coastal winds predicted to make life difficult for those near the shore.
“It’s going to be rather breezy for the South Coast, with persistent strong winds expected,” Guy explained.
Authorities are urging residents and holidaymakers to exercise caution and avoid risky sea activities, as rough coastal waters could endanger lives.
Severe Thunderstorm Warnings in Place
KwaZulu-Natal remains under a level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms. While the likelihood of these storms forming is considered low, forecasters warn that their impact could be significant if they do develop.
“If severe storms occur, the consequences could be major,” Guy cautioned.
In terms of temperatures, inland towns such as Ladysmith and Newcastle will experience cooler daytime highs, while Durban is expected to stay cloudy and wet, with a maximum temperature around 19°C.
