Firefighters Battle Massive Blaze at Opal Paper Mill in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs as Smoke Blankets Local Area

A massive fire has erupted at the Opal Paper Mill in Matraville, eastern Sydney, forcing emergency services into action and prompting warnings for locals to stay clear of the area.

The blaze, which started shortly after 1pm on Friday, has quickly escalated, creating thick plumes of smoke visible for miles.

Firefighters Struggle Against Wind-Fuelled Flames

More than 80 firefighters are currently battling the inferno, which has been fanned by strong winds.

The fire has spread to at least 10 vehicles within the industrial complex, complicating efforts to contain it.

Emergency teams are working tirelessly to prevent further damage and protect nearby businesses and homes.

Police Evacuate Surrounding Areas

Police are actively evacuating residents and workers in the vicinity to ensure their safety.

A NSW Police spokesperson urged the public to avoid the area: “As emergency services work to contain the blaze, police are urging people to stay clear due to the large smoke.

Motorists are also advised to find alternative routes as traffic diversions are in place.”

Dramatic Scenes Captured From Above

Aerial photos show the site shrouded in enormous clouds of black smoke, highlighting the scale of the disaster.

Locals described the scene as shocking and frightening.

“It was a picture-perfect day, then all of a sudden there was black smoke everywhere and very loud bangs,” one resident told the Daily Telegraph. “I couldn’t see my garage from my back door from the smoke.”

Firefighters and emergency teams continue to battle the blaze, and authorities have warned that it may take several hours to fully bring it under control.
