Rising Bundesliga coach Dino Toppmoller reveals ambition to lead Manchester United while Ruben Amorim fights for stability at Old Trafford

Dino Toppmoller may be leading Eintracht Frankfurt to new heights in Germany, but he’s not shy about admitting where his ambitions lie.

The 44-year-old manager, who has quickly built a reputation as one of the brightest young coaches in the Bundesliga, has revealed that one of his long-term dreams is to manage Manchester United.

For Toppmoller, Frankfurt isn’t just another job. It’s home.

He watched his father coach in the Bundesliga here as a teenager, and that created an emotional connection with the club.

Still, the lure of Old Trafford has always lingered in the back of his mind.

Building His Career Step by Step

Before making his mark in Frankfurt, Toppmoller gained valuable experience working as an assistant at RB Leipzig.

He then joined Bayern Munich’s backroom staff between 2021 and 2023, where he worked closely with Hansi Flick, now Barcelona’s boss.

Those years sharpened his tactical mind and gave him the platform to take on a head coach role.

When Frankfurt came calling in 2023, he didn’t disappoint.

Since then, he’s helped young stars like Hugo Ekitike and Omar Marmoush flourish, while also guiding the club into the Champions League for the very first time.

Their debut could hardly have gone better—they smashed Galatasaray 5-1 and currently top their league phase group.

United Dreams and Childhood Memories

Speaking on the Phrasenmaeher podcast, Toppmoller admitted that the Premier League is part of his vision for the future. And not just any club—Manchester United.

“As a kid I always picked United when I played computer games,” he recalled.

“Back then, they were right up there with Real Madrid as the biggest club in the world. To coach them one day would be something extraordinary.”

For now, he insists he is happy at Frankfurt, describing it as a “fantastic club,” but his words make it clear where his eyes may eventually wander.

Tough Times at Old Trafford

While Toppmoller’s stock is rising, things look very different at Manchester United. Ruben Amorim, who took over almost a year ago, has struggled to steady the ship.

Last season ended with a disastrous 15th-place finish, and this campaign hasn’t started much better—five games in, United sit 11th in the table.

The pain was amplified when they crashed out of the Carabao Cup to lower-league side Grimsby Town.

That defeat was a bitter reminder of how fragile the team has become, even as Amorim tries to rebuild.

A Small Step Forward Against Chelsea

The pressure on Amorim hit boiling point after a derby loss, but his team managed to respond with a crucial win over Chelsea at the weekend.

It wasn’t enough to completely silence the critics, yet it gave the under-fire coach some breathing room.

After the match, Amorim stressed the importance of turning one win into consistent form.

“It’s just three points,” he said, “but it’s a start. We need momentum.

The environment around the club demands it. We can beat anyone on our day, but we can also lose to teams like Grimsby if we’re not at our best.”

The Road Ahead

Amorim knows he’s still walking a fine line.

United fans have grown impatient with inconsistency, and another poor run could drag the club back into crisis.

The next challenge comes on Saturday with a trip to London, where they’ll face Brentford.

That match will also mark Bryan Mbuemo’s return against his former side, adding extra spice to the occasion.

Meanwhile, from Germany, Toppmoller will be watching on.

His heart may belong to Frankfurt for now, but his mind can’t help but dream about one day stepping into the Old Trafford dugout.
