Liverpool fans had high hopes for Florian Wirtz when the German midfielder arrived from Bayer Leverkusen in a £116million transfer this summer.
However, the start to his Premier League journey has been quieter than expected, with no goals or assists registered so far in either the league or Champions League.
Staying Calm Amid Pressure
In a candid interview with Sky Germany, the 22-year-old admitted that he would have loved to have made a bigger impact by now.
“Yes, of course I would have liked to score a goal or get a few assists.
But no matter what anyone says, I’m staying cool,” Wirtz explained.
He also revealed that he puts enormous pressure on himself to perform for Arne Slot’s side and is growing weary of hearing the same advice repeatedly.
“I don’t want to constantly hear ‘give it time, give it time.’ I just try to do better each time than before,” he said.
Time on the Bench
Wirtz’s struggle for rhythm was evident as he was left on the bench for Saturday’s Merseyside derby and rested during Tuesday’s Carabao Cup victory over Southampton.
Despite this, he insists he isn’t performing poorly—he just hasn’t been able to convert his chances into tangible contributions.
“Sometimes there are just phases where things aren’t going your way.
I haven’t experienced that often in my career.
Once I get through it—it might seem harsh, because I’m not playing badly, just haven’t got the points yet—it will come, and everything will be fine,” Wirtz said.
Patience Is Key
The midfielder remains patient and confident in his ability to deliver.
“I know full well that I can play good football. Sooner or later, things will return to normal.
No matter what anyone says, I stay cool. I just try to do better every time than before.”
Building Chemistry With Isak
As Wirtz continues to adapt to his new surroundings, he will hope to develop a strong partnership with Alexander Isak, who is set to start at Crystal Palace this weekend after Hugo Ekitike picked up two yellow cards in the win over Southampton.
Ekitike, in contrast to Wirtz, has hit the ground running at Anfield.
Tactical Options and Upcoming Challenges
Slot now faces a decision: persist with Wirtz in the No 10 role or shift him to the left wing.
Dominic Szoboszlai impressed behind the striker during the derby, while Cody Gakpo’s recent performances on the flank have come under scrutiny.
Liverpool head to Selhurst Park on Saturday to face the Eagles at 3:00pm before a challenging Champions League trip to Galatasaray next Tuesday.
It could be the perfect opportunity for Wirtz to find his footing and start delivering for the Reds.
