Jimmy Kimmel is back in the spotlight. After being suspended for a week over controversial remarks about Charlie Kirk’s murder, the late-night host’s talk show will return to ABC screens on Tuesday night.
The Walt Disney Company, which owns ABC, confirmed the decision, ending a brief but highly publicized hiatus.
Why the Suspension Happened
Kimmel was taken off the air last Wednesday following comments he made about MAGA supporters’ reactions to the alleged killer, Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old from southern Utah.
His remarks suggested that some were trying hard to distance themselves from Robinson while using the tragedy for political points, a statement that sparked immediate backlash.
A Disney spokesperson explained the decision to suspend production: “We made the choice to pause the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at a highly emotional time for the country.
Some comments were ill-timed and insensitive, and after thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, we agreed the show could safely return on Tuesday.”
The Controversial Remarks
The remarks in question aired during Kimmel’s show this past Monday. He criticized MAGA supporters, saying:
“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and with everything they can to score political points from it.”
Kimmel also commented on the White House response, noting that while flags were flown at half-staff, President Trump’s public handling seemed oddly detached.
He joked about the president focusing on a White House construction project instead of mourning, quipping, “Yes, he’s at the fourth stage of grief: construction.
This is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he called a friend.”
Response and Reprimand
The remarks quickly drew criticism, including from FCC Chair Brendan Carr, prompting Disney to temporarily suspend the show.
Kimmel spent the intervening week in discussions with the network before returning to the airwaves with the episode scheduled for Tuesday night.
