Western Cape Blood Service Encourages South Africans to Donate Blood During Heritage Month to Save Lives

With Heritage Day just a week away, many South Africans are busy stocking up on braaivleis and charcoal. But this year, you can celebrate your heritage in an even more meaningful way—by giving the gift of life. The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is calling on everyone to donate blood and help keep the province’s blood reserves well-stocked.

Their latest campaign, “Giving is in my blood: Make blood donation part of your heritage,” encourages South Africans from all walks of life to roll up their sleeves this September and October.

The goal? To prevent potential blood shortages and save countless lives.

“As we celebrate our diverse heritage, we encourage everyone to make giving part of their identity,” says Marike Carli, WCBS public relations manager.

“There is no substitute for blood – it’s a selfless act that saves lives and supports families.”

How Your Blood Can Make a Difference

Did you know that one unit of blood (475 millilitres) can save up to three lives? Every donation goes directly toward replenishing WCBS’ blood stock, helping patients across the Western Cape.

To become a donor, you’ll need to meet a few simple requirements:

  • Be between 16 and 75 years old

  • Weigh 50 kilograms or more

  • Be medically healthy

  • Lead a safe lifestyle

It’s also important to eat a hearty meal three to four hours before donating.

This helps maintain fluid levels before and after your donation.

As a thank-you, donors will receive a special water bottle as part of the campaign.

Can’t Donate? You Can Still Help

If donating blood isn’t possible, you can still make an impact.

Through WCBS’ “Through our Extra Drop” initiative, you can request that R15 be donated on your behalf to a selected beneficiary.

For September and October, this beneficiary is the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR), which provides life-saving bone marrow transplants.

The funds help expand the donor registry and secure more transplants for patients in need.
