Troops of the 12 Brigade, Nigerian Army, have pulled off a significant operational success in Kogi State under Operation IGBO IDANU I, clearing a notorious terrorist camp and recovering large caches of weapons and ammunition.

The Army described the mission as a decisive strategic blow to insurgents linked to Kachalla Ibrahim and Shu’aibu, two figures known for orchestrating attacks in the region.

Challenging Terrain, Courageous Troops

The statement released on the Army’s official X account highlighted the difficulties faced by the soldiers.

Advancing through dense forests, marshy grounds, and multiple riverine obstacles, the troops demonstrated remarkable resilience, professionalism, and tactical discipline.

Fallen trees and flooded tracks slowed progress, but Brigadier General Kasim Umar Sidi, commander of the 12 Brigade, personally led the operation, ensuring coordination and momentum.

Tactical Foot Maneuvers Secure Surprise

In a calculated move to gain the upper hand, the troops dismounted and advanced on foot, allowing them to achieve tactical surprise.

This approach enabled them to penetrate deep into the terrorist enclave, forcing the insurgents to flee before any direct confrontation.

The Army emphasized that despite the escape of the militants, the operation was a success because of the thorough exploitation of the site, resulting in the recovery of significant quantities of arms and ammunition.

Weapons and Ammunition Recovered

Among the seized items were eight boxes of 7.62 x 54 link ammunition, each containing bandoliers of 250 rounds, and one box of high-velocity grenades.

These recoveries, the Army noted, have seriously undermined the terrorists’ operational capability and logistics base, making it harder for them to regroup or launch further attacks in the area.

Camp Destroyed to Prevent Reoccupation

After clearing the camp, soldiers systematically destroyed and set it ablaze, denying the insurgents any opportunity to reuse the location.

Troops have continued aggressive patrols and offensive operations in the surrounding areas to maintain pressure on fleeing elements and prevent them from reorganizing.

Commitment to Security

The Army stated that this operation sends a strong message to terrorists that hideouts will be constantly identified and neutralized.

It reaffirmed its dedication to protecting lives, safeguarding communities, and ensuring long-term peace in Kogi State and the broader region.

What’s Next?

While the clearance of this camp marks a significant milestone, the Nigerian Army is expected to maintain heightened patrols across Kogi State and other vulnerable areas.

Intelligence-led operations will likely continue to track fleeing terrorists, dismantle their networks, and recover additional arms caches.

Analysts say sustained pressure, coupled with community engagement, will be key to preventing future attacks and ensuring lasting stability in the state.
