The NFL has officially wrapped up its disciplinary action against Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Jalen Carter, and it’s a costly one.
Carter is being fined $57,222, the equivalent of his Week 1 game check, after spitting on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott just seconds into their season opener.
Ejection and Fine Explained
Carter didn’t last long in that game—he was ejected only six seconds after kickoff, leaving Philly to play without him in what still turned into a 24-20 victory over Dallas.
The league later confirmed that his ejection would count as a one-game suspension already served, and no further suspension will be enforced.
The 24-year-old has decided not to appeal the punishment, meaning he’ll be available for the Eagles’ highly anticipated matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs this Sunday.
NFL Sends a Strong Message
In its statement, the league emphasized its stance on sportsmanship this season.
Officials reminded teams, players, and the NFLPA that unsportsmanlike conduct—especially visible acts like spitting—will draw serious consequences.
“League rules prohibiting unsportsmanlike conduct are of vital importance,” the NFL said.
“Particular emphasis is being placed on sportsmanship this season.”
What Actually Sparked the Spitting Incident?
Slow-motion replays made Carter look like the clear aggressor, but reports later revealed more context.
Prescott had spit on the ground near Philadelphia’s huddle while Eagles fullback Ben VanSumeren was down injured on the opening kickoff.
Carter took offense, believing it was aimed at his team during a sensitive moment.
That’s when Carter turned and spit toward Prescott with a referee standing nearby, leading to his immediate ejection.
Prescott Defends His Side
After the game, Prescott tried to explain the misunderstanding.
He said spitting is something he does constantly on the field without thinking.
“I’ve probably spit a thousand times during the game,” he said.
“I guess I needed to spit so I spit ahead. He (Carter) thought I was trying to spit on him. I wouldn’t try and spit on anyone.”
Prescott admitted he was shocked Carter was tossed from the game, saying it changed Dallas’ game plan.
Still, he called it “unfortunate circumstances” that would inevitably draw media attention.
Carter Owns Up to His Mistake
For his part, Carter expressed regret and apologized to his teammates and fans.
“I feel bad for my teammates and the fans out there.
It was a mistake that happened on my side.
It won’t happen again,” he said.
“I wanted to be out there with the guys so bad.”
From Controversy Back to Football
Carter has quickly become one of the NFL’s top defensive linemen since being drafted ninth overall in 2023.
A Pro Bowler last season, he was a key figure in Philadelphia’s Super Bowl win over the Chiefs.
Now, fate brings the two teams back together in a Sunday showdown that has all the makings of a blockbuster.
With the fine behind him, Carter will have the chance to shift the spotlight back to what he does best—dominating on the defensive line.
