Princeton University Student Elizabeth Tsurkov Is Freed by Kata’ib Hezbollah and Returns Safely to the American Embassy in Baghdad

Relief has swept through the international community as Elizabeth Tsurkov, a Princeton University student, has been released after being held hostage in Iraq by militant Hezbollah forces.

She is now safe at the American Embassy in Baghdad, where officials are ensuring her well-being.

Trump Announces Tsurkov’s Release

Former President Donald Trump confirmed the news on Tuesday afternoon, highlighting the ordeal she endured.

“I am pleased to report that Elizabeth Tsurkov, a Princeton student whose sister is an American citizen, was just released by Kata’ib Hezbollah and is now safely in the American Embassy in Iraq after being tortured for many months,” he said.

He added a firm message directed at militant groups, urging the immediate release of all hostages.

Iraqi Government Confirms Safe Return

Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani also verified her release, emphasizing the extensive work of Iraqi security services over several months.

“We reaffirm, once again, that we will not tolerate any compromise in enforcing the law and upholding the authority of the state, nor will we allow anyone to undermine the reputation of Iraq and its people,” he stated, highlighting the country’s commitment to protecting both citizens and foreign visitors.

Circumstances of Her Kidnapping

Tsurkov disappeared in March 2023 during a research trip in Baghdad.

Months later, the Israeli government confirmed that she had been abducted by the Shiite group Kataeb Hezbollah, also known as Hezbollah Brigades.

In a video released by the group in November, Tsurkov was shown making claims that she worked as an agent for Mossad and the CIA, and that she attempted to instigate demonstrations and unrest in Iraq.

A Scholar in the Middle East

In reality, Tsurkov was a respected expert on Middle Eastern affairs, particularly focused on the conflict in Syria.

Her research and insights had been cited by international media over the years, providing valuable analysis on regional dynamics.

Her sudden disappearance in March 2023 left colleagues, friends, and the academic community concerned for her safety.

International Response and Next Steps

Her release marks a significant achievement for diplomatic and security efforts in Iraq.

As she recovers and debriefs with officials at the embassy, international attention remains focused on the broader situation for hostages in conflict zones.

Authorities are expected to continue their efforts to prevent similar incidents and ensure justice for victims of militant abductions.
