Arsenal midfielder Martin Odegaard responds to leadership doubts as Mikel Arteta and teammates back his captaincy in North London

Being captain of a club like Arsenal always comes with extra pressure, but Martin Odegaard isn’t letting outside opinions shake his confidence.

At 26, the Norwegian midfielder has already worn the armband since 2022, guiding the Gunners through three consecutive Premier League title chases—even if they’ve narrowly missed out on silverware each time.

Leadership Questioned Despite Strong Performances

Odegaard’s numbers speak for themselves: 26 goals and 26 assists in three league seasons while carrying the captaincy role.

Yet, critics still question whether he is the right man to lead Arsenal.

His appointment came after the exits of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette, but some argue that others, including Declan Rice, might be better suited for the responsibility.

Tony Adams Pushes for Change

Former Arsenal skipper Tony Adams has been one of the louder voices calling for change.

Speaking at an Irish Independent Sport event, Adams suggested that Declan Rice embodies the kind of leadership that could take the club to the next level.

According to him, Rice offers consistency, durability, and the foundation for a title-winning team—something he believes Odegaard cannot provide.

Odegaard Shrugs Off the Criticism

When asked about the comments while on international duty, Odegaard responded in a calm, no-nonsense manner.

“I don’t care that much, to be honest,” he admitted.

“Everyone can have their opinion and say what they want.

I can’t let it affect me—that’s been my mindset throughout my career.”

Arteta and the Players Stand Firm

Despite outside noise, the atmosphere inside the Arsenal camp tells a different story.

Ahead of the current season, Odegaard won a convincing players’ vote to remain captain.

Mikel Arteta, backing him fully, revealed the result wasn’t even close: “By a mile, everybody chose Martin Odegaard.

That’s the clearest sign of who the squad believes should lead them.”

Odegaard himself acknowledged the backing, saying, “We voted for it.

Ultimately, it was the manager’s decision, but it was a nice confirmation for me.”

Arsenal’s Season Marches On

For now, Odegaard remains at the heart of Arsenal’s leadership structure, both as playmaker and captain.

The Gunners have already collected two wins from their opening three fixtures, and they’ll look to build momentum when they welcome Nottingham Forest this Saturday.
