Kaizer Chiefs have decided to keep midfielder George Matlou around for at least another season, surprising some fans after last year’s minimal appearances.
The 27-year-old only played once in the league last season, and rumours swirled that he might be part of the exodus from the club.
Between May and July, Amakhosi let go of nearly ten players, but Matlou was notably retained, signaling the club still sees potential in the midfielder.
Matlou Confirms His Commitment
Represented by Mscsports Talent, Matlou’s contract extension was officially announced on X (formerly Twitter). The agency posted:
“George Matlou commits to the journey! The midfielder extends his stay with the Amakhosi.”
Since joining the Soweto giants from Swallows in 2022, Matlou has made just 41 appearances over three years, making this extension an interesting vote of confidence from Chiefs.
Chiefs Bring in Khanyiso Mayo
It hasn’t been all about contract extensions at Naturena.
Last week, Kaizer Chiefs welcomed Khanyiso Mayo on loan from Algerian side CR Belouizdad. Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. spoke warmly about the new signing:
“It’s no secret that we wanted to bring Khanyisa to Naturena before his move to Algeria.
He has a proven track record in the league, and we believe he will add significant value to the squad this season when we play in the league, as well as on the continent.
He joins a select group of athletes who’ve made their families proud by following in their footsteps.
We are truly happy to have him here and wish him all the best.”
What’s Next for Matlou
Kaizer Chiefs are scheduled to face Sekhukhune United next week, leaving fans wondering if Matlou will finally see more playing time this season.
His contribution could be vital if the team hopes to improve on last year’s performances.
