If 2025 will be remembered for anything in tennis, it’s the epic battles between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
Their third straight Grand Slam final didn’t disappoint, with Alcaraz coming out on top in New York to reclaim the world No.1 ranking and capture his sixth major title.
The Spaniard’s 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory added another thrilling chapter to what is shaping up as one of the sport’s greatest modern rivalries.
A Night That Had More Than Just Tennis Drama
But while fans tuned in expecting a blockbuster match, the spotlight wasn’t entirely on the court.
Former British star Laura Robson, now a Sky Sports pundit, stirred debate by ignoring a directive not to mention Donald Trump’s presence in the stadium.
The US President’s attendance brought heavy security, long queues, and even a delayed start to the final — sparking frustration among both fans and pundits alike.
Trump’s Polarizing Reception
Once Trump eventually took his seat, he was briefly shown on the big screen during the national anthem, saluting proudly.
The crowd’s response was mixed at first, but when cameras picked him out again after the opening set, the reaction turned into a wave of boos with only scattered cheers.
Despite a USTA email warning broadcasters not to highlight any reactions to Trump, Robson broke ranks, pointing out the negative response on air: “They’ve just shown Trump on the big screen, lots of boos,” she said.
Security Snarls and Delays
Trump’s appearance wasn’t without consequences.
With airport-style checks and 22,000 fans to process, hundreds were still stuck outside even as play entered the second set.
Many missed Alcaraz’s brilliant opening, leaving the stadium half-empty for what should have been a roaring start.
Tennis legend Martina Navratilova didn’t hide her anger, calling the situation “absolutely insane” and highlighting the thousands of dollars fans had spent to see the match.
The Year of Alcaraz and Sinner
Beyond the politics and security headaches, the final capped off a remarkable year for Alcaraz and Sinner.
In May, the Spaniard produced a historic comeback at Roland Garros. In July, Sinner stormed Wimbledon to grab the upper hand.
And now, in September, Alcaraz hit back at the US Open to level their Grand Slam duels at two apiece.
Mutual Respect Between Rivals
Despite the fierce competition, there was nothing but respect between the two young stars.
Lifting the trophy, Alcaraz addressed his rival warmly: “I see you more than my family! It’s great to share everything with you and watch you improve every day.
Congratulations on your amazing season.”
Their rivalry may only just be beginning, but already it’s one for the ages.
