Lightning suspends NFL season opener between Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field in dramatic third quarter

The 2025 NFL season kicked off with an unforgettable twist on Thursday night as Mother Nature forced an unexpected pause.

The highly anticipated showdown between the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys was suspended in the third quarter due to lightning strikes near Lincoln Financial Field, leaving fans both frustrated and amazed.

Players and Fans Evacuate Amid Thunderstorm

With just 4:44 left in the third quarter and the Eagles leading 24-20, officials made the decision at 10:26 PM to clear the field.

PA announcers urged fans to seek shelter immediately, and players quickly headed to safety as the storm rolled in.

Reporters confirmed that lightning had been detected within eight miles of the stadium, triggering a 30-minute clock.

If no further strikes occur during that time, the game can resume—but any new lightning resets the countdown, meaning fans could be in for a long, tense night.

National Weather Service Clarifies Storm Alerts

Adding to the confusion, the National Weather Service had to correct earlier warnings issued by the Eagles.

A post on X clarified:

“A thunderstorm is approaching south Philadelphia. At this time, the primary threats are lightning and brief downpours.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is not currently in effect.”

Earlier, the stadium had displayed a message telling fans:

“A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for our area.

These storms may produce severe conditions, including lightning and strong winds.

For your safety, please exit the open seating area at this time and take shelter along the concourses. Thank you for your cooperation.”

Opening Night Chaos Began Early

The lightning delay wasn’t the only dramatic moment on opening night.

The game had already started with chaos just six seconds in when Eagles defensive star Jalen Carter allegedly spat at Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, earning an immediate ejection.

Compounding the mayhem, Eagles fullback Ben VanSumeren suffered a serious knee injury on the opening kickoff, requiring medical attention and a cart to leave the field.

Eagles Shine Despite Wild Night

On the field, Jalen Hurts showed why the Eagles are reigning Super Bowl champions, throwing for 111 yards and running in two touchdowns of his own.

Saquon Barkley added a third score, keeping Philadelphia ahead in a heated battle with their longtime rivals.

Even with the storm and early incidents, the opener promised fans an intense and unpredictable season, setting the tone for what could be one of the most exciting NFL campaigns in recent memory.
