Al Ahly sack Jose Riveiro after a poor start leaves the club in twelfth place of the Egyptian Premier League in Cairo

Al Ahly’s experiment with Jose Riveiro has come to an abrupt end.

After just three months in charge, the Egyptian giants decided to part ways with the Spanish coach following a disappointing start to their season.

His final game at the helm was a 2–0 defeat against Pyramids on Saturday, a loss that not only marked the club’s first defeat of the campaign but also left them languishing in 12th place on the Egyptian Premier League table after four matches.

The Club’s Official Statement

By Sunday, Al Ahly confirmed that Riveiro’s contract had been terminated by mutual consent.

In their announcement, the club expressed gratitude for his efforts during his short stay, but acknowledged that results simply weren’t matching expectations.

“The club thanked Mr. José Riveiro, the technical director of the first football team and his staff for their work over the past period,” the statement read.

“The contractual relationship was terminated by mutual consent.”

How the Decision Was Made

The decision came after lengthy meetings with the club’s Planning Committee, which included president Mahmoud Al-Khatib and sports director Mohammed Youssef.

Reports were reviewed and, after hours of discussion, it was agreed that the partnership had to end.

The committee acknowledged Riveiro’s hard work and professionalism but made it clear that Al Ahly has ambitions that stretch beyond local success—they want continental dominance too.

With results faltering, the club felt they needed a reset.

A Record That Fell Short

Riveiro’s stats tell the story: just one win in four league matches.

For a team like Al Ahly, where winning is non-negotiable, that simply wasn’t enough to keep him in the dugout.

What Comes Next for Al Ahly and Riveiro?

While Al Ahly continue their meetings to decide who will lead the team next, speculation is already turning to where Jose Riveiro might land.

Having previously impressed with Orlando Pirates in South Africa, he may not be short of offers, but his brief stint in Egypt will certainly be seen as a setback.

For Al Ahly, the focus now shifts to finding the right technical body to guide them through the rest of the season—one that can reignite their domestic charge and keep their African ambitions alive.
