Football has always been about more than just the game—it’s about friendships, memories, and bonds that last a lifetime.
Portugal recently showed this in the most heartfelt way as they honoured the late Diogo Jota, passing his iconic number 21 shirt to his close friend and former team-mate, Ruben Neves.
Remembering Diogo Jota
The football world was left in shock earlier this summer when Jota, aged just 28, died in a tragic car accident in northern Spain alongside his younger brother, André Silva, 25.
The tragedy came only 11 days after Jota had married his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso, adding even more heartbreak to an already devastating loss.
Neves Chosen to Carry the Number
Portugal’s head coach Roberto Martinez explained why the number 21 jersey will now be worn by Ruben Neves.
The two men shared a close relationship during their time together at Wolves, and Neves even carried Jota’s coffin at his funeral last month. Martinez said:
“The number 21 jersey will go to Ruben Neves because, that way, that number will remain on the field and with all of us.
He had a very close relationship with Diogo and is the ideal person to represent him.”
Preparing for Life After Jota
Portugal are about to play their first international fixtures since Jota’s passing, with World Cup qualifiers against Armenia and Hungary on the horizon.
For Martinez, these games carry even greater meaning.
He reflected on Jota’s legacy, saying the team will use his memory as a driving force to chase the ultimate dream—winning the World Cup.
“We want to honour his memory every day. Diogo’s example is a light for us.
His absence is a source of unity, motivation and responsibility, because Diogo wanted to win the World Cup.”
Jota’s Final Moments in a Portugal Shirt
Jota’s last appearance for Portugal came in June when he came off the bench in extra time to help his country beat Spain in the Nations League final.
That victory now feels even more symbolic, as it was the last time he wore the national colours.
A Brotherly Bond Lives On
For Neves, the tribute is deeply personal. He shared an emotional message after Jota’s death, saying:
“When I go to the national team, you’ll still be by my side at the dinner table, on the bus, on the plane… you’ll always be there with me, as usual.
We’ll keep laughing, making plans, sharing our lives with each other.”
Liverpool’s Farewell Gesture
Jota’s legacy isn’t only being carried on in Portugal.
Liverpool, where he wore the No 20 shirt, announced that the number will be retired across all levels of the club.
The decision was made after consulting with Jota’s wife and his parents, Isabel and Joaquim—a lasting sign of respect for a player who gave everything to the club.
