Shilo Sanders is coming to terms with a harsh reality: his NFL career might already be in jeopardy.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers waived the 25-year-old safety following a heated altercation during a preseason matchup with the Buffalo Bills, leaving him unsure about what comes next.
A Moment of Madness
The incident occurred last Saturday when Sanders got involved in a scuffle with Bills tight end Zach Davidson, throwing punches that led to his ejection from the game. Less than 24 hours later, Tampa Bay released him from the roster.
Coach Todd Bowles expressed disappointment in Sanders’ conduct, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
Acceptance and Perspective
Speaking publicly for the first time since the incident, Sanders didn’t dwell on the altercation itself but acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding his career.
“I’ll be talking to my agent and we’re waiting on the next opportunity,” he said. “If that’s in the NFL, cool.
But God has blessed me with a lot of talent to do things other than football. I know God always has a plan for me.”
Sanders is determined to turn the experience into a learning opportunity, seeing it as a stepping stone for future growth.
“I feel like this is just part of my story to grow and do bigger and better things,” he explained.
“I’ve had the best time up here in Tampa, but everything happens for a reason.
Whether it’s finding another team or another opportunity in the NFL, it is what it is.”
Gratitude Despite Setback
Despite the setback, Sanders spoke warmly about his time with the Buccaneers.
He praised his teammates, coaches, and the city of Tampa for their support, saying the experience will always remain meaningful.
“My time being with the Buccaneers has been nothing but great.
Everybody has poured in love and support toward me and I’ll be forever grateful for that,” he said.
Learning From Family
Sanders also reflected on his brother Shedeur’s NFL Draft experience.
Watching Shedeur slide to the fifth round before being picked by the Cleveland Browns offered Shilo perspective on his own undrafted journey.
“You all saw how the draft went,” Sanders said. “I’m lucky to even get a shot.
Seeing how Shedeur went, I knew what was going to happen to me being undrafted… It was a great experience for me, and I’m forever grateful for that.”
Staying Ready for the Next Opportunity
For now, Sanders is focused on staying in shape and ready for whatever comes next, maintaining hope that another NFL opportunity could appear.
“I’m just staying in shape, staying ready for the next opportunity and we’ll be ready for anything,” he concluded.
