Chris Froome stabilised in Toulon hospital after high-speed training crash leaves him with five broken ribs and back injury in France

Cycling fans were left holding their breath as four-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome suffered a severe crash during a training ride near Toulon, France.

The 40-year-old British rider was airlifted to a nearby hospital on Wednesday afternoon, and he is now scheduled for surgery after sustaining multiple injuries.

Details of the Injuries

According to his Israel-Premier Tech team, Froome is fortunately stable and did not suffer any head injuries.

However, scans revealed a collapsed lung (pneumothorax), a fracture to a lumbar vertebra, and five broken ribs.

The team confirmed he will undergo surgery later on Thursday to address his back injury.

A social media statement from the team read:
“Chris Froome was airlifted to hospital in Toulon following a serious training crash.

No other cyclists or vehicles were involved. We will provide updates on his condition after surgery.”

Froome Remains Conscious and Responsive

French newspaper L’Equipe reported that Froome was conscious upon arrival at the hospital and able to communicate with medical staff.

His condition is being closely monitored as he prepares for the procedure.

Career Context and Recent Performances

Froome, who joined Israel-Premier Tech in 2021, recently competed in the Tour of Poland, finishing 68th overall.

His career has been challenged by injuries since a heavy crash at the Criterium du Dauphine in 2019, and he has yet to return to his peak form.

Despite recent setbacks, Froome’s legacy remains impressive.

His last major victory came in 2018 when he won the Giro d’Italia, completing a clean sweep of cycling’s Grand Tours, a rare feat in the sport.
