A celebratory night for one matric student in Estcourt quickly turned into a disciplinary headache for the KwaZulu-Natal police.
Over the weekend, a video circulated showing police officers giving a learner a blue-light escort in a police vehicle to their matric dance—a move that has sparked public outrage and professional consequences.
Suspension and Investigation Ordered
Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, the Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal police, announced on 28 August that the officers involved had been suspended pending an internal misconduct investigation.
The officers will also be held financially accountable for misusing state resources.
A statement from the provincial police emphasized that the officers’ actions represented a clear neglect of their core duties.
Rather than providing visible policing, responding to public complaints, or safeguarding the community, they diverted state resources for personal purposes.
Accountability for State Resources
Mkhwanazi instructed the District Commissioner of Uthukela to ensure swift disciplinary measures against the immediate commanders responsible for the officers.
He stressed that the misuse of state assets, including police vehicles, time, and fuel, will be financially recouped from the employees involved.
“It is intolerable for police to be gallivanting with state resources that should be used to serve the community,” Mkhwanazi said.
Upholding Professionalism in the Force
The commissioner reiterated the importance of professionalism and the protection of the police service’s image.
He made it clear that any official found misusing vehicles, stationery, or other state property will face severe disciplinary measures, potential criminal charges, and even possible dismissal.
“Police officers must always remember that state resources are meant to serve the public, not personal activities,” he added.
Public Reaction and Accountability
The incident has sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many questioning the judgment of the officers involved.
Mkhwanazi’s decisive action sends a strong message that the KwaZulu-Natal police will not tolerate misuse of public resources under any circumstances.
Community members are encouraged to share their thoughts on the disciplinary measures either by commenting online or sending a message via WhatsApp.
