Carlos Alcaraz debuts a surprise buzz cut as he arrives at Flushing Meadows for his US Open opener in New York

Tennis fans got a surprise at Flushing Meadows on Monday when Carlos Alcaraz stepped onto the court looking almost unrecognizable.

Known for his signature longer hairstyle that’s been part of his image since his rise to the top, the 22-year-old Spaniard showed up with a brand-new buzz cut ahead of his first US Open match.

From Flowing Locks to a Buzz Cut

Just two days before, Alcaraz was seen practicing in New York with his usual flowing hair.

But by the time he arrived for his opening clash against American Reilly Opelka, he had swapped it out for a close-cropped style.

His new look instantly became a talking point as cameras caught him warming up before the match.

Rory McIlroy Joins the Fun

Adding to the buzz, quite literally, golf superstar Rory McIlroy made his way onto the Queens practice court during Alcaraz’s session.

McIlroy, who recently unveiled his own haircut change — a crew cut that revealed more of his graying hair — immediately noticed Alcaraz’s fresh trim.

Pointing at the new style, McIlroy joked, “Why this?”
Laughing, Alcaraz replied, “Just got a haircut that I struggled with. I mean, I had to start fresh.”

McIlroy gave his approval, saying, “Yeah, good. I like it. It’s a good look.”

Mutual Admiration Between Stars

The lighthearted moment turned into mutual admiration.

Alcaraz admitted he’s a huge fan of the five-time major golf champion, while McIlroy suggested they should hit the golf course together sometime.

Alcaraz loved the idea, joking he’d welcome lessons since he can’t seem to replicate McIlroy’s swing.

The golfer quickly returned the compliment, admitting he could never pull off Alcaraz’s signature backhand.

Eyes on the Title

Haircuts aside, Alcaraz is still very much one of the favorites to lift the men’s singles trophy in New York.

He’s reached the final in the last two Grand Slams, splitting victories with current world No. 1 Jannik Sinner.

With his game as sharp as his new haircut, fans are eager to see if the Spaniard can add another major to his name at the season’s final Slam.
