For many travellers, the airport lounge sets the tone for their journey — a place to relax, refuel, and reset before takeoff.
South African Airways (SAA), in partnership with Discovery, is making sure that passengers at Cape Town International Airport get just that.
This week, the airline is unveiling its fully refurbished domestic departures lounge, promising a more luxurious and passenger-friendly space.
From Delays to Grand Opening
The lounge originally closed in March and was scheduled to reopen by the end of July.
After a few weeks’ delay, the much-anticipated opening is finally happening on Friday, 22 August.
This revamp follows similar upgrades to SAA lounges at OR Tambo International in Johannesburg and Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport in Gqeberha.
Luxury Features Designed for Comfort
The newly designed lounge isn’t just about fresh paint and new furniture — it’s a complete upgrade in how passengers experience pre-flight downtime. Among the standout features are:
-
Copper-clad concierge desks offering a warm, personalised welcome
-
A mixology show-bar with expert baristas and bartenders
-
Buffet dining that includes gourmet breakfasts, all-day meals, and curated canapés
-
Private focus booths for work, calls, or even entertainment
-
Collaborative workspaces with diverse seating options
-
Universal charging ports and high-speed WiFi throughout the space
It’s a mix of leisure and functionality, catering to both business travellers and those flying for pleasure.
A Step Towards Rebuilding Trust
SAA’s CEO, John Lamola, described the new lounge as part of a bigger vision — putting passengers at the centre of the airline’s comeback story.
Since emerging from business rescue in 2021, SAA has been working to rebuild its reputation, expand its route network, and modernise its fleet.
Despite its rocky past, the airline is slowly regaining international recognition.
In the 2025 Skytrax rankings, SAA placed 67th globally, climbing two spots from the previous year, and held onto its title as Best Airline Staff in South Africa.
Recognition for Cape Town International Airport
It’s not just SAA making headlines. Cape Town International Airport itself earned three major honours in the 2025 Skytrax awards: Best Airport in Africa, Best Airport Staff Service in Africa, and Cleanest Airport in Africa.
These accolades add to the sense of pride around the launch of the new lounge.
What This Means for Travellers
With its modern design, gourmet food, and focus on customer comfort, the refurbished lounge signals more than just an upgrade — it’s a symbol of SAA’s renewed commitment to quality travel.
Whether you’re flying for business or leisure, the airline wants passengers to feel that their journey begins well before boarding the plane.
