Chris Pratt Reveals Cast Resistance to Using AI Actor for Key Role in Sci-Fi Movie Mercy While Discussing Film on The Graham Norton Show in London

Hollywood has been buzzing over the use of artificial intelligence in movies, and Chris Pratt has weighed in with his thoughts from the set of his latest sci-fi thriller, Mercy.

The actor revealed that the cast was hesitant about the idea of an AI replacing one of the key roles, highlighting ongoing debates about AI in creative spaces.

Chris Pratt on the Role of AI in Mercy

In Mercy, Pratt, 46, portrays a detective racing against time—just 90 minutes—to prove his innocence before an advanced AI judge, brought to life by Rebecca Ferguson, after his wife’s alleged murder.

Speaking on The Graham Norton Show, Pratt reflected on the film’s futuristic premise: “It is set in the near distant future and oddly the AI doesn’t seem that far-fetched.

The story unfolds in real time, and it’s very active and immersive—keeps you on the edge of your seat. The reaction so far has been awesome.”

When asked whether an AI could have played the Judge Maddox role, Pratt didn’t hold back: “No. Everyone was resistant to that. I don’t think it would have worked.

I love AI and use it all the time, but as a parent, it freaks me out. That said, it’s also incredibly cool!”

Pratt Shares a Heartwarming Gift from Arnold Schwarzenegger

The conversation on the show also turned personal, with Pratt revealing a special Christmas present from his father-in-law, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

He said: “Arnie’s love language is going all out with his gifts. One of ours was a six-by-eight-foot portrait painting of our three children and him dressed as Santa Claus.

It’s the most beautiful, lifelike portrait you’ve ever seen. Very thoughtful, though we’re not entirely sure what to do with it for the rest of the year!”

Family Life and Personal Details

Pratt and Katherine Schwarzenegger share two daughters and a son.

In addition, the Guardians of the Galaxy star has a teenage son, Jack, with his ex-wife, actress Anna Faris.

Star-Studded Lineup on Graham Norton

This week’s episode also featured Wicked star Cynthia Erivo alongside comedians Dawn French and Rob Beckett.

Musician Jack Savoretti performed We Will Always Be The Way We Were live before joining Norton to chat about his album and an upcoming gig at the Royal Albert Hall.

The Graham Norton Show airs on BBC One and iPlayer at 10:40 pm on Fridays.
