The NFL world was rocked this week with revelations about a shooting at Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid’s office, an incident that had remained under wraps for more than a year.
According to a Kansas City Star report, bullets shattered the calm of Reid’s workspace at the team’s practice facility in May 2024.
Reid, 66, was alone in his office when a bullet tore through the glass window, struck the blinds, and lodged into a wall just 15 feet from his desk. Fortunately, nobody inside was injured.
How the Incident Unfolded
The shooting occurred shortly after midnight on May 4, 2024, at the Chiefs’ practice facility, which also houses their corporate offices and sits next to Arrowhead Stadium.
Alongside the bullet that landed near Reid, two others struck the building—one hitting the third floor above his office, and the other an exterior air conditioning unit.
Kansas City Police Department spokesperson Capt. Jacob Becchina told the Kansas City Star there is no evidence Reid was specifically targeted.
“Because the building was occupied at the time of the bullet coming through the window, the case is being investigated as an aggravated assault,” he said.
Overnight security reportedly heard a noise and noticed the bullet hole, but no arrests or charges have been made, and the investigation remains open.
Reid’s Office Now Bulletproof
In response to the shooting, Reid’s office has been fitted with bulletproof glass.
The Chiefs managed to keep the incident under wraps for 15 months, with even some staff members reportedly unaware of it.
The report paints a picture of Reid diligently working late into the night—a routine for him, as his office on the second floor overlooks the practice fields.
Security at the facility operates 24/7, with increased fencing and cameras now monitoring the entire perimeter.
Chiefs’ Recent Glory and Heightened Attention
Three months before the shooting, Reid had led the Chiefs to their third Super Bowl title in five years, aiming for a historic three-peat.
However, the team fell short in February 2024, losing 40-22 to the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans.
The Chiefs’ dominance has drawn both admiration and resentment across the league, with some accusing the NFL and referees of bias.
High-profile media attention has only intensified due to tight end Travis Kelce’s relationship with pop superstar Taylor Swift.
A Team Under the Spotlight
The Chiefs recently featured in a behind-the-scenes ESPN documentary, showing Reid arriving at the facility in the middle of the night, underscoring his relentless work ethic.
Despite this routine dedication, the shooting highlights the unusual level of attention—both positive and negative—surrounding the team.
With enhanced security measures now in place, including extra fencing and comprehensive camera coverage, the Chiefs are making sure that such a frightening incident does not happen again, while Reid continues his late-night focus on leading the team.
