North London felt electric on Thursday as Arsenal looked to capitalize on Manchester City’s stumble against Brighton.
With City only managing a draw earlier in the week, the Gunners had a golden opportunity to extend their Premier League lead to eight points.
However, Arsenal’s clash with Liverpool at the Emirates ended in a goalless stalemate, leaving the table gap at six points.
Despite controlling large portions of the first half, the home side struggled to break down Liverpool in the second, and the night ended with neither team finding the net.
First Half Drama: Arsenal on Top
Bukayo Saka started brightly, continuing his impressive record against Liverpool with constant threat down the left flank.
The England international repeatedly troubled Milos Kerkez and Alexis Mac Allister, delivering crosses that forced Liverpool to scramble defensively.
Saka even had the first meaningful effort of the match, only to see his shot comfortably saved by Alisson.
Liverpool, without top scorer Hugo Ekitike due to injury, had a scare when Conor Bradley’s audacious chip struck the crossbar after a miscommunication between William Saliba and goalkeeper David Raya.
Arsenal maintained control, and a tense moment in the penalty area involving Jeremie Frimpong, Declan Rice, and Virgil van Dijk ended without a decision, leaving the first half cagey yet dominated by the hosts.
Second Half Shift: Liverpool Push Back
The momentum shifted after the break, with Liverpool enjoying more possession and pressing higher up the pitch.
Florian Wirtz appealed for a penalty after a strong challenge from Leandro Trossard, but VAR confirmed referee Anthony Taylor’s decision to play on.
Arsenal struggled to keep control of the ball as the crowd’s nerves grew.
Manager Mikel Arteta made changes, bringing on Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli for the ineffective Viktor Gyokeres and others.
Despite these fresh legs, Arsenal rarely tested Alisson, with Szoboszlai’s free-kick coming close but sailing over the crossbar.
Missed Chances and Late Frustrations
In the final 15 minutes, Arsenal had a few half-chances, with Jesus and Martinelli denied by Alisson, but the home side couldn’t find the breakthrough.
Tensions flared when Martinelli pushed an injured Bradley off the pitch, leading to Bradley being stretchered off.
Gabriel headed wide from a late corner, and Arsenal’s attempt to make a statement fell short.
Both sides had opportunities, but the match ended 0-0, leaving Arsenal six points ahead of Manchester City, with 51 points still up for grabs across the remaining 17 games.
What Lies Ahead for Arsenal
While the Gunners remain top, the stalemate highlighted areas of concern, particularly their inability to convert chances in critical moments.
With Liverpool 14 points behind and the title race still open, Arsenal will need sharper finishing and more clinical displays if they are to finally end their 22-year wait for a league crown.
