San Francisco 49ers Sign Veteran Quarterback Nate Sudfeld to One Year Deal to Strengthen Depth Behind Starter Brock Purdy in California

The San Francisco 49ers are taking no chances with their quarterback depth this season.

Veteran quarterback Nate Sudfeld has officially returned to the team on a one-year deal, stepping in to provide insurance behind starter Brock Purdy, who has struggled with injuries in recent campaigns.

Sudfeld Returns to Familiar Territory

At 30 years old, Sudfeld is no stranger to the 49ers, having previously spent time with the team in 2021.

His familiarity with the organization’s playbook could make the transition seamless and gives the coaching staff added confidence that the team has a reliable backup option ready if Purdy faces any setbacks.

Mac Jones Sits Out Practice Amid Knee Concerns

The timing of Sudfeld’s signing comes as backup quarterback Mac Jones was notably absent from practice, reportedly dealing with a knee injury sustained during Saturday’s game, according to NBC Sports Bay Area.

This development only underscores the 49ers’ need for additional quarterback support.

Career Highlights and NFL Journey

Sudfeld’s career highlights include his time with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he earned a Super Bowl ring in 2017 as part of the team’s title-winning season.

He served as a backup to both Carson Wentz and Nick Foles that year and later spent stints with the Detroit Lions and the 49ers in various roles.

Originally a sixth-round pick by the Washington Commanders in 2016, Sudfeld has now spent seven NFL seasons across Washington, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Detroit.

Over that span, he has appeared in six games, completing 25 of 37 passes for 188 yards and one touchdown.

Injuries Impact 49ers Roster

Quarterback depth isn’t the only area affected by injuries.

Running back Patrick Taylor Jr. has been placed on season-ending injured reserve.

Taylor had been contributing as a reserve back, but the 49ers will now need to adjust their offensive rotation for the rest of the campaign.
