In a move that has motorsport fans buzzing, Oscar Piastri will soon have a grandstand named after him at the Australian Grand Prix.
The McLaren driver described the honour as “surreal,” acknowledging just how special it is to be celebrated in his home country.
A Prime Spot at Albert Park
The new Piastri Grandstand will be located directly opposite the pit lane at Melbourne’s Albert Park circuit—arguably the heart of Australian Formula 1.
For 24-year-old Piastri, racing at home has always carried extra meaning, and now it comes with a permanent marker of his achievements.
“Surreal” Experience for a Rising Star
Taking to social media, Piastri shared his excitement:
“It is pretty surreal, it still feels weird racing at home – it is very cool racing at home.”
The young Australian’s words capture the mix of pride and disbelief that comes with being recognised at such a high level, especially while still climbing the ranks of Formula 1.
Joining an Elite List of Drivers
Albert Park isn’t short on F1 legends. Other drivers who have stands named after them include Jack Brabham, Arthur Waite, Alan Jones, Daniel Ricciardo, and Mark Webber.
Piastri is now joining this prestigious list, highlighting the impact he’s making early in his career.
Leading the Championship
Piastri currently sits at the top of the drivers’ standings with 284 points, narrowly ahead of his McLaren teammate Lando Norris.
With ten races left in the season, his performance is attracting attention worldwide.
The Australian Grand Prix will also kick off next season, putting him front and centre on home soil once again.
A Honour Typically Reserved for Legends
Grandstands are usually named after drivers with a long history of accomplishments.
Former F1 star Mark Webber praised the move, noting that it reflects Piastri’s impressive results and his comfort at the elite level.
“Clearly he is very comfortable at the elite level and making his presence felt, which is brilliant, and representing Australia in the way that the country likes to be represented,” Webber said.
