Tributes have poured in following the sudden passing of Pa (Patrick) O’Dwyer, one of Ireland’s most celebrated strength athletes, on Saturday, January 3rd. The 40-year-old from Rathkeale, Co Limerick, was known affectionately as the “Limerick Lion”.
Five-Time Ireland’s Strongest Man and UK Champion
Pa O’Dwyer held the title of Ireland’s Strongest Man an unprecedented five times. His incredible feats didn’t stop at home—he made history in 2018 as only the second Irishman to claim the UK’s Strongest Man crown.
He also competed internationally, becoming a familiar face on the Giants Live tour and earning a place in the World’s Strongest Man competition in 2020, cementing his reputation as one of Europe’s top strongmen.
From Farm Life to International Strength
Growing up on a farm in Rathkeale, O’Dwyer built the foundation for his incredible physical strength early in life. In his twenties, he worked on the roads, before turning his focus fully to weight training and competitive strength sports.
His journey from farmhand to world-class strongman inspired countless fans, proving that dedication and hard work could turn passion into achievement.
A Personality Loved by Fans
Beyond his athletic achievements, Pa was admired for his warm personality and sense of humor, which shone through in interviews, television appearances, and social media content.
Fans remember him not just for his physical prowess but for the joy and entertainment he brought to the strength sports community.
The Irish Strength Association paid tribute, stating:
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Pa O’Dwyer this morning. Pa will be a massive loss to the strength community. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends, especially his partner Layna, daughter, and two sons, Sienna, Rocco, and youngest Freddy.”
