Behind the success of one of the richest men in the world stood a woman whose sacrifices and determination made it all possible.
This week, Jeff Bezos announced with a heavy heart that his mother, Jacklyn Bezos, passed away peacefully at the age of 78 after battling Lewy Body Dementia.
The Amazon founder shared the news in an emotional tribute, saying she left this world surrounded by family and love.
“We were all so lucky to be in her life,” Jeff wrote, adding that he would hold her “safe in his heart forever.”
From Teen Mom to Tireless Provider
Jacklyn’s story was far from easy. At just 17 years old, she became pregnant while still a high school student in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
In the mid-1960s, being a teenage mother wasn’t accepted, and she faced enormous challenges.
Her father fought to make sure she could finish school, even if that meant no extracurriculars and no graduation walk across the stage.
Despite the odds stacked against her, Jacklyn refused to give up on her education or her son.
She enrolled in night classes and worked at a bank during the day, often juggling textbooks in one bag and baby supplies in another.
Finding Love and Building a Family
It was at that bank job that she met a young Cuban immigrant, Miguel “Mike” Bezos.
The two fell in love, married, and Mike adopted Jeff as his own.
Together they built a family, raising Jeff along with his younger siblings, Christina and Mark.
This partnership became one of the most important anchors in Jeff’s life — a mother who believed in him endlessly and a stepfather who stood beside them both.
Betting on Their Son’s Dream
In 1995, when Jeff was starting a little online bookstore called Amazon, Jacklyn and Mike made a life-changing decision.
They invested nearly $250,000 into their son’s company — a staggering amount of money at the time and a massive risk, considering the internet itself was still seen as a fad.
Jeff later admitted he told them there was a “70 percent chance” they’d lose everything.
But they didn’t hesitate. “They weren’t betting on Amazon,” he said. “They were betting on me.”

Over the years, Jacklyn and Mike gave back generously.
They donated hundreds of thousands of Amazon shares to the Bezos Family Foundation, supporting education and philanthropy.
They also enjoyed the fruits of their success, purchasing a $34 million Miami waterfront mansion in 2022, a gift made possible with Jeff’s help.
But through all the wealth and recognition, Jacklyn remained grounded in the role that mattered most to her — being a loving mother, grandmother, and wife.
