What began as a lighthearted gesture to gift KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi two cows has taken a heartwarming turn.

Instead of keeping the funds for himself, Mkhwanazi is looking to channel the donations toward helping children of police officers who have died in the line of duty.

Approval Pending to Redirect Funds

Mkhwanazi is currently awaiting approval from the Office of the National Commissioner to deposit the crowdfunding proceeds into the South African Police Service Education Trust (SAPSET) account.

The move reflects his commitment to ensuring that the money benefits a broader, meaningful cause.

Supporting the Education of Children of Fallen Officers

Once approved, the donations will go directly to SAPSET, which assists the educational needs of children who have lost parents serving in the police force.

Since its establishment in 2010, SAPSET has helped over 1,000 children cover school and university fees, making a tangible difference in their lives.

Crowdfunding Campaign Surpasses Expectations

The initiative was launched earlier this month by popular X user Chris Excel, originally aiming to gift Mkhwanazi two cows as a “token of appreciation.”

The campaign quickly gained traction and raised nearly R50 000.

Rather than accepting the gift, Mkhwanazi offered to redirect the funds to SAPSET, turning a personal tribute into a gesture of public good.

Mkhwanazi Expresses Gratitude

Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi thanked everyone who contributed to the campaign, emphasizing the role of the public in supporting not just police officers but also the families left behind after tragic losses.
