David Walliams is trading headlines for hammocks as he soaks up the sun in the Maldives with his 12-year-old son, Alfred.
The author and comedian, 54, appears unfazed by the recent storm surrounding his professional life after his publisher, HarperCollins, decided to halt publication of his future works.
Allegations Shake HarperCollins
The troubles for Walliams began in 2023 when allegations of inappropriate behavior toward female employees at HarperCollins surfaced.
A major internal investigation was launched, culminating in a reported five-figure settlement to one former staff member.
Others were advised to work in pairs and avoid visiting Walliams’ home.
Despite the seriousness of these claims, Walliams has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
A spokesperson for HarperCollins confirmed the decision not to publish any new titles by the author.
They emphasized that employee wellbeing remains a priority and that the company has established processes for reporting and investigating concerns.
Life in the Maldives
Meanwhile, Walliams seems to be making the most of his escape.
In a series of Instagram posts, he is seen scuba diving with turtles, swimming, and enjoying afternoon tea at the Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa.
Captions like “floating in heaven” and “complete and utter perfection” paint a picture of a luxurious getaway, with villas reportedly costing over £4,500 per night.
The resort has even shared his posts on their own social media pages.
A Career Once Crowned in Television
Walliams, known for his work on Britain’s Got Talent, has had a turbulent career in recent years.
Past scandals, including offensive comments made about contestants in 2020, led to his departure from the show.
He later sued the production company for misuse of private information and reportedly received around £5 million in compensation.
Despite stepping back from television, Walliams’ books have remained a significant part of the publishing world.
Since his first children’s book, The Boy in the Dress (2008), he has released over 40 titles, translated into 55 languages, with more than 60 million copies sold.
However, recent years have seen his book sales decline sharply, dropping by over 60% this summer.
Controversies Continue
Walliams’ controversies haven’t stopped at HarperCollins.
Earlier this year, reports surfaced of inappropriate behavior toward fans and a controversial moment on the BBC’s Would I Lie To You?, where he performed Nazi salutes during a broadcast, causing discomfort among cast and audience members.
Family Life in Focus
Despite the professional and public upheaval, Walliams remains close to his son Alfred, co-parenting with ex-wife Lara Stone following their divorce in 2015.
While Walliams is currently single, Stone has moved on and is married to property developer David Grievson.
What Lies Ahead
As Walliams enjoys his Maldives retreat, the future of his career remains uncertain.
With HarperCollins stepping away from publishing his new works and ongoing scrutiny over past actions, the comedian and author faces a challenging path forward—balancing personal life, public image, and professional legacy.
