Chloe Madeley recently opened up about some of the more awkward—and hilariously uncomfortable—moments in her family life.
The 38-year-old TV personality revealed that her father, Richard Madeley, has a habit of skipping underwear, which has led to more than a few surprising encounters at home.
The revelation came during an appearance on Romesh Ranganathan Parents Evening, where Chloe and Richard shared some candid laughs about their family dynamics.
Richard’s Underwear-Free Lifestyle
Richard, 69, first made headlines for his decision to go commando, shocking viewers on Good Morning Britain when he spoke about giving up underwear years ago.
On the show with Romesh, he explained the reasoning behind the choice.
“Yeah. It’s just… I don’t know why, in my early 30s, I just suddenly found that boxes, and budgy smugglers, and all of that, they just chafe.
So I got rid of them. And I’ve never looked back,” Richard admitted.
Chloe’s Red-Faced Confessions
Romesh quickly turned to Chloe, asking if she knew about her father’s quirky habit.
Chloe, visibly red-faced, recounted the many “incidents” that made late-night kitchen trips a challenge.
“No, no, no. We had many, um, incidents with… you know.
When I would walk into the kitchen late at night, and then immediately just walk straight back out again,” she explained, leaving the audience laughing.
Richard and Judy’s Love Story
The conversation naturally shifted to Richard’s love life, where he reflected on meeting his wife, Judy Finnigan, in 1982.
Working for separate programmes at Granada TV, the pair eventually tied the knot in 1986 and went on to have two children together: Jack and Chloe.
Richard shared that becoming a stepdad to Judy’s children from a previous relationship was something he took very seriously.
On an episode of Matt Willis’ On the Mend podcast, he explained the thought process behind moving in with Judy.
Taking Step-Parenting Seriously
“Judy and I worked together for years before we even talked about the prospect of getting together,” Richard said.
“One of Judy’s main concerns was obviously her kids. They came first in any move she might make.
I remember her saying, ‘you’ve got to understand I come in a three-pack—it’s me and Tom and Dan.’”
Richard recounted taking a solo trip to Greece to reflect on whether he could truly commit to being a stepdad.
“I went away for two weeks and just sat on a beach thinking quite deeply about the future and how I felt.
And I felt very comfortable with it. The boys were adorable—they were only seven, and they were absolutely adorable,” he added.
Balancing Family and Fame
The Madeley household has long been in the public eye, but it’s clear that beneath the TV cameras, family life has had its fair share of comedic and tender moments.
From underwear-free dads to careful step-parenting decisions, the duo’s candid reflections show the real, human side of a famous family.
