If you haven’t heard yet, Showmax just dropped the trailer for the highly awaited third season of Youngins — the teen drama that’s been making waves all over South Africa.

Since its relaunch, the series has smashed records for the most first-day views on the platform.

So, clearly, this show has struck a serious chord with fans.

A Launchpad for New South African Talent

Youngins isn’t just a hit because of its gripping stories — it’s also a spotlight for fresh, young talent.

Stars like Ayakha Ntunja and Kealeboga Masango first caught eyes here before landing big roles in popular Mzansi Magic shows like Inimba and Genesis.

It’s become a real stepping stone for young actors hungry to make their mark.

What’s Coming Up in Season 3

The final season will start streaming on Showmax from 19 September, with three brand new episodes releasing each week.

To celebrate, Keneilwe Matidze — who not only directs casting but also brings Pearl, the energetic Life Orientation teacher, to life on screen — shared some behind-the-scenes stories about the show’s success.

The Magic Behind the Scenes

Did Keneilwe expect Youngins to become such a sensation? Her answer: “Honestly, yes!” She recalls how auditions were buzzing with energy.

“Kids showed up from morning till night, and even after long hours, we were dancing together outside.

That vibe was contagious. The talent was incredible, and the story promised to be something really special.”

Meet the Fan Favourite: Tumelo

One character who’s captured hearts is Tumelo, played by Lebogang Lephotsoana.

Keneilwe describes Lebo as a “triple threat” — acting, singing, and dancing with equal skill. “He’s the glue that holds the friendship group together.

Lebo’s positivity and energy are infectious — he even kept me up to date with all the TikTok moves and slang!”

The Emotional Depth of Mahlatse

Then there’s Thabiso Ramotshela, who plays Mahlatse and has become known for bringing serious emotional weight to the show, especially in Season 2.

Keneilwe praises his dedication: “Thabiso pushed himself to make Mahlatse’s story feel raw and real.

I worried about him sometimes because he dug so deep, but that’s what made his character so believable.”

Supporting Roles That Shine Bright

The supporting cast also brings plenty to the table. Take Tshepo Matlala, who plays Tshepo — he’s the source of much-needed humour and warmth.

Keneilwe says, “Tshepo throws his whole self into every scene.

We’d rehearse off-camera and find ways to bring even more life to the script. He always surprises me with fresh ideas.”

Celebrating Authentic Queer Stories

Youngins also stands out for its honest and heartfelt queer representation.

Keneilwe explains how the chemistry between Tabile Tau (Sefako) and Lebogang (Tumelo) was carefully nurtured: “On-screen intimacy is tough to pull off for any actors, but these two were open and professional.

Their friendship and dedication made the scenes really genuine.”

Real Connections Beyond the Screen

The cast’s bond doesn’t stop when the cameras roll. Keneilwe shared a moving moment about Katlego Moloke, who plays Alex and came out during his audition.

“He told me, ‘Yeah, but Tumelo is gay, and I’m gay,’ which humbled me.

It really showed how far South Africa has come. Katlego brought depth to Alex that I hadn’t even imagined.”

How to Watch and Catch Up

Fans can tune in for the final season’s big finale starting 19 September on Showmax, with new episodes dropping weekly.

If you want to revisit the earlier seasons, Seasons 1 and 2 are still available on Showmax.
