The New England Patriots paused their usual pre-game energy to pay tribute to the victims of Saturday’s tragic shooting at Brown University.
Before facing the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, fans at Gillette Stadium were asked to observe a moment of silence, braving the bitter cold to show solidarity with the Rhode Island community.
The Patriots also shared a heartfelt message to their “neighbors” in Rhode Island, expressing sorrow and support for those affected.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to the families impacted and are grateful to first responders who acted swiftly,” the team said, emphasizing that the entire organization stands with Brown University during this difficult time.
Arrest Made After Deadly Campus Shooting
Law enforcement confirmed that a person of interest connected to the shooting has been taken into custody.
The suspect, an unidentified male in his 20s, was detained at the Hampton Inn in Coventry early Sunday morning.
Authorities revealed that the shooter fired over 40 rounds from a 9mm handgun and had a second firearm in his possession.
Two loaded 30-round magazines were also found, along with a gun described as having a “unique characteristic.”
The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to piece together the events.
Campus and City on High Alert
The shooting occurred around 4:05 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Brown’s engineering building, right in the middle of students’ end-of-semester exams.
In the immediate aftermath, students were forced to shelter in place for several hours while police scoured the campus.
Late Saturday, officials released video footage showing a person of interest walking on Waterman Street, dressed entirely in black.
This individual was later detained amid heavy police activity around 3 a.m., CNN reports.
Community Response and Safety Measures
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley urged residents to breathe a “small sigh of relief” following the arrest.
At a Sunday morning press conference, he confirmed an increased police presence throughout the city to provide comfort and reassurance to the community while the investigation continues.
Many local businesses announced they would remain closed as the community grappled with the shock and grief.
Brown University President Christina Paxson addressed the media, acknowledging the devastation but also highlighting the resilience of the campus.
“Everybody’s reeling, and we have a lot of recovery ahead of us,” she said.
“Our community’s strong, and we’ll get through this, but it’s devastating.”
Bills Team Impacted by Nearby Shooting
The Buffalo Bills, staying just two miles from the scene of the tragedy, were also affected.
Players remained locked down at their hotel, reflecting the tense reality of how close the violence struck to those living and working in the area.
Moving Forward
As authorities continue their investigation, the focus remains on community healing, support for victims, and ensuring the safety of Providence residents and Brown University students.
