Sometimes, decisions in football aren’t just about stats or salaries—they come straight from the heart.
That’s exactly how Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang described his return to Marseille, and he couldn’t be more thrilled about linking up with one of the league’s rising stars—Mason Greenwood.
A Fresh Partnership Brewing in Marseille
After a successful run in Saudi Arabia, Aubameyang is back in France and ready for another shot at glory with Marseille.
But what really sparked excitement during his unveiling was his admiration for Greenwood.
Speaking to the press, the Gabonese striker shared that even before signing, he’d already been hearing plenty of praise about the former Manchester United forward.
“I had a teammate in Saudi who had played with Greenwood in Spain,” Aubameyang recalled.
“He called him a phenomenon. I’ve followed his progress closely. Now, I’m happy he’s on our side.”
Greenwood’s Comeback Leaves Lasting Impressions
Greenwood’s journey has been far from smooth.
He burst onto the scene at Manchester United with huge promise, only to see his career thrown into uncertainty when he faced serious legal charges in early 2022.
Though the charges were later dropped in February 2023, his time at United came to an abrupt end.
Determined to turn things around, he joined Getafe for a fresh start in La Liga.
His one season there spoke volumes—10 goals and six assists in 36 matches.
That performance opened the door to Marseille, where he hit the ground running.
Greenwood smashed in 22 goals and played a massive role in securing second place for Marseille in Ligue 1 last season.
Aubameyang Aims to Push Marseille Over the Line
For Aubameyang, returning to Marseille isn’t just about nostalgia—it’s about unfinished business.
He believes the team is in a great position to challenge for the Ligue 1 title this time around, especially with Greenwood firing up front.
“I had strong offers from the Middle East and Europe,” he admitted.
“But this decision came from the heart. I’ve had incredible moments here, and I want more of them.”
He added, “I’ve worked hard, and I feel ready. I posted updates to show how sharp I am physically, but the real answer will be what I deliver on the pitch. Mentally and physically, I’m in a great place.”
A Second Chance to Shine at the Velodrome
This isn’t Aubameyang’s first dance with the club.
During his previous spell, he racked up 30 goals and 11 assists, proving he could still deliver at a high level.
After bouncing around from Arsenal to Barcelona, then Chelsea, and more recently Al-Qadsiah in Saudi Arabia—where he scored 21 goals last season—he’s finally settled again.
Despite his past club-hopping, his Premier League legacy remains strong, especially at Arsenal, where he scored 68 times in 128 games before parting ways under Mikel Arteta’s leadership in 2022.
What’s Next for the Marseille Duo?
As the new Ligue 1 season approaches, fans are eager to see how the partnership between Aubameyang and Greenwood will unfold.
Both players are coming off impressive seasons in different leagues, and now they’ve got one goal in mind—bringing silverware back to Marseille.
Whether they’ll go all the way remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Aubameyang believes this squad has what it takes to do something special.
And with Greenwood by his side, that belief might just become reality.
